I felt my flaws were on display – that the things I hate most about myself or try to conceal were under the spotlight and that I would be JUDGED.
They would see that I wasn’t perfect – I have a stray hair, even a grey hair, that my lips aren’t symmetrical or my eyebrows are certainly sisters and not twins! They’ll see that up close my skin isn’t smooth, that some pores are quite big or what if I have a tiny patch of dry skin…
I hope they don’t notice.
They are looking at me and all of this, not even with their eyes but with a big lens – maybe even zoomed in!
As I’m thinking about it I realise I’m feeling nervous, unconfident, shy, even embarrassed.
I’d really love this to be over with because I’m SO uncomfortable!
Now they can see that too. They can see that I’m blushing, turning red, I’m fidgeting a bit with nervous energy.
I feel under a microscope.
Both my FAULTS and FEARS on display.
But I’m only having my photograph taken.
It shouldn’t be this big a deal – but it can be!
It’s not even about how bad I might look in the photograph – it’s also about NOW – the experience with the picture taker – it feels so close, so intimate and they are seeing parts of me I don’t normally let others see. It’s this and wondering do they notice and are they judging me?
No I’m not naked but it feels like it.
Then I worry if I’m standing ok – am I doing it right?!
Am I making my double chin look worse? Does my posture look ok because I do stoop a lot.
All of these worries – it’s a scary experience!
And this for me was with anyone taking my picture – not even a professional photographer!
Heck, I even get shy taking my own Selfie!
Some people aren’t just ‘not comfortable’ in front of the camera or ‘camera shy’ – they really do find it to be stressful! Maybe you’re not too bad, you don’t love having your photo taken but you’re not too overwhelmed by it. Or, perhaps you feel even more strongly about it!
What I can tell you is comforting and may revolutionise how you feel about being photographed. I have a great insight because of my own experiences in front of the camera – but also as a professional photographer myself!
Firstly, your photographer is not judging you!
All of those things which you build up in your head – every single flaw you feel that you have – it is not what they see. It is not what I see.
I see YOU your essence and it is my mission to capture you, that spirit, that image of you in this moment in your life.
When I’m looking at you through the camera I am thinking about how FANTASTIC everything looks – you, the light, the skin tones, the bokeh… and I’m busy capturing you at your BEST, in the most flattering way possible.
I may move the framing and composition to compliment your stance or posture – to create lovely shapes.
I look for angles to FLATTER you, locations to create a fabulous backdrop for you. And, if I DO find something in the scene like a nail with chipped polish or a grey hair – I’ll work it out so that in the photos you wouldn’t know about it!
You’re in safe hands. You’re not under critique & I’m looking at the BEST of you, all of you & telling it in a story of pictures.
I will only shoot what does you JUSTICE and together the collection of images is a beautiful representation of YOU. You’ll cherish them and ALWAYS have those moments in your life. You’ll look back on them and also the experience with a fond heart.
Secondly, I want to have a wonderful, warm, fun time with you! It’s so important to me that you feel comfortable! Even if you are shy or the thought of a photo session makes you feel vulnerable – I will understand and help you through it.
